I loved putting together my Mary Poppins costume for Halloween, especially because a number of these items were already in my closet. Well, I should clarify that some of these items were in my closet, but the key pieces from this look were from my mom’s closet. I borrowed the navy coat, red, knit scarf and the ruffled white button-down shirt. Hooray for having a mom with excellent style and for wearing a similar size!

South Hall at UC Berkeley made the perfect backdrop for this English nanny inspired look. I think it would have been next level to have a carpetbag or the parrot umbrella, but overall I am pretty happy with how this look came out. I picked went to Starbucks in this and the barista wrote Mary Poppins on my latte cup!

Here is how I made my Mary Poppins Hat:

Mary Poppins Hat DIY Instructions

1 black hat
2 faux daisy flower stems (I used these and these)
1 red berry stem
Glue gun and glue sticks

  1. Grab a wool felt hat. I wasn’t willing to use the one I already had, but I found this hat on clearance at Target the weekend before Halloween.
  2. Pull daisies and berries apart from there stems.
  3. Heat up your glue gun and attach faux daisy flowers and red berries around the hat.
  4. Wear it for a jolly holiday!

The hat was very easy to put together, but I did struggle to find one in the exact style as Mary Poppins used, but you work with what you got.

I hope this inspires you to grab a glue-gun and decorate your own hat.
